Hello, some great news! As part of the University of Manchester’s Arts Access Fair, the Whitworth Park Community Archaeology Project has received an award to support our work with local schools. The award, for a project called Dig: Creative Interpretations, was secured by site co-director Dr Melanie Giles, and myself, Dr Karina Croucher. I am currently working in the archaeology department at the University of Manchester, and I come from a background of working with the University’s Widening Participation team, where I ran Humanities outreach events and the University’s flagship Gateways programme. The project will build on last year’s Poetry Workshop, working with the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Centre, exploring park-inspired creativity, including artwork, poetry and storytelling, drawing on excavation, oral histories and personal accounts of Whitworth Parklife. At the end of the project, participants will be invited to share their creations in an event at the University. I’ll post further details here as they develop – I’m really looking forward to working with the Whitworth team on this exciting project.
